Season 1 Episode 3: Are you in or are you out?
Today I want to talk about the number one reason people fail to learn English.
It's simple, but for some reason most students don't recognize it.
It's not a lack of vocabulary, phrasal verbs, prepositions or anything like that.
It's the simple fact that learning a new language is hard. Really hard.
Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying to you.
It is an ENORMOUS task. It takes consistent motivation and dedication. Probably, learning a new language will one of the most difficult undertakings of your life.
The United State Foreign Service (the guys who train the CIA and spies), estimate that it takes a Brazilian approximately 600 hours to become fluent in English English. That is 15 full workweeks. Or if you study an hour a day, it's more or less 2 years. In other words, it takes time.
But if you stick with it, I promise that learning English will change your life in so many positive ways. You will learn so much about the world, yourself, other people, cultures, and ways of thinking. It will open doors that you never knew existed.
But here's the thing; the cold hard truth. A verdade nua e cru.
Most students do not approach learning a new language as one of the most important events in their life. For most students, learning a new language is simply another activity like going to school, taking a vacation, or exercising. But it SO MUCH more than that. It is really a change in lifestyle.
The majority of language learners students enroll in a course, watch TV in English, subscribe to some YouTube channels and download a couple of apps.
If you take this approach, I guarantee you will never be fluent. Maybe you will pick up enough English to travel, order food at a restaurant, etc. But you will never truly be an English speaker and will never experience all of the joys that come along with learning a new culture and people.
So, if you really want to learn English, if you are serious about it, you have to decide now. Are you in our or are you out?
